That night when Jillian got home from work, she stepped off the elevator and nearly right onto a single white rose. She bent down and picked it up and brought it to her nose. She wondered who had dropped it. She was breathing in its fragrance when she saw the bottle of champagne. It was just sitting dead center in the carpeted hallway…obviously, recently chilled. She smiled and picked that up. Two more steps and she found a box of chocolates. She bent down to pick those up and when she stood up she found Jude…standing in his doorway with a grin. “What’s all this?” she asked. He had on a button up blue shirt that was the same color as his eyes and a pair of jeans. His feet were bare and his shirt was unbuttoned half-way down. She could see the smooth, hard lines of his chest and her fingers instantly itched to touch him.

“An apology,” he said.

“You don’t owe me an apology.”

“I do,” he said. “Can you come in for a minute so we don’t have to have this conversation in the hall?”

“Sure.”

After she was settled on the couch, Jude got two glasses and opened the champagne. As he poured them each one he said, “I’m sorry that I acted like an ass last night. What happened between you and Dax, happened before I met you and you didn’t even have to explain. I did a lot of soul-searching last night and I think, honestly, the thing that I was most disillusioned about was Dax. It was just so hard for me to grasp that he was cheating on his wife. It kind of makes him a hypocrite, actually. He’s always been an outspoken advocate of marriage. I’m wondering now if that was only for his rich wife’s benefit.”

“She is rich?”

“She comes from old money…and yes, her family has a lot of it. Dax told me once that he signed a pretty tight pre-nup when they got married. He denies that he ever wanted her for her money and back then, I believed him. But, if he was unhappy enough to stray…and he really did have feelings for you but he wouldn’t divorce her…then maybe he really is only in it for the money.”

Jillian furrowed her brow. “Doesn’t he have money of his own? He’s been working in the fashion industry for a long time, right?”

“Yes, he makes decent money…but making a quarter of a million dollars a year and having to work for it every day is worlds apart from having a family who started one of the first diamond and gold jewelry exchanges in New York and has only gotten stronger every year since. His wife’s father died three years ago. She’s worth billions.”

“Wow, I had no idea.”

“Yeah, like I said, he doesn’t talk about it. Anyways, whatever Dax’s motivations were for staying with her and allowing you to walk out of his life…he’s an idiot. I’m not going to stress about what he thinks when he was screwing you and his wife over at the same time.
